Oxford University Visit

A group of our Year 10 students travelled to University College at Oxford University to experience what a typical day looks like at Oxford University. This was a fantastic opportunity to explore higher education that they may not have considered before.

The day began with a tour of the grounds and an explanation of how the university is made up of colleges. They then looked at student accommodation before lunch was provided in the grand hall.

Two university ambassadors, both in their 3rd year studying Law and History gave a truthful and heartwarming insight into their university experience and what their career progression might be once they’ve completed their final year. One of the ambassadors then went on to give a ‘Law Taster Session’ which was a very interesting and encouraging subject that our students may want to explore.

Some fascinating facts were learnt about Oxford Students, learning a language from scratch is encouraging regardless of what course you sign up for, so it wasn’t too surprising to discover our students were going to experience just that. They had a taster session in learning the Welsh language. The students’ learnt the Welsh alphabet, numbers 1-20, how to say their ages and learnt to how to say the longest Welsh word Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch.

Our Y10s were informed about scholarships, funding for university and the application process. Any students who apply to Oxford University must go through an interview process. Our students sampled part of the interview process where an example of a graph was given to analyse at an interview. Our students did extremely well with this activity which was aimed at 18years+

As always, our students at OHA made us incredibly proud of their positive and sensible attitudes, they thoroughly enjoyed their day out and we hope they relish the opportunity given to them to help inspire and raise their aspirations for their future.
