Assistant Principal – Classroom Practice
No matter what your career stage working at Ormiston Horizon Academy provides you with opportunities to shape lives of really amazing young people, for career progression and job satisfaction.
Teaching is at the heart of our academy and we strive to give our students the best education we can in an environment they feel supported and enjoy coming to school.
New staff to the academy are all offered a mentor from existing staff to touch base with and ask all those questions you’re not quite sure how to ask on your first day. We provide annual flu vaccinations for all academy staff, have a flexible and generous approach to family appointments and children’s events, are part of the childcare voucher scheme, have a free counselling service available to everyone and scheduled wellbeing weeks and days where we encourage all staff to leave site early to do something that makes them happy.
Workload challenges are understood and we have publicised deadlines and annual calendar consultations. Marking policies are adapted on an individual department basis and we actively encourage collaborative planning within departments.
At OHA we take a bespoke approach to professional development and have made adaptions in our timetable to support our staff giving dedicated CPD time each week. This programme is shared half-termly and a combination of whole school CPD, departmental CPD, career stage CPD or even individualised support where requested or required.
As a school we are part of a large multi-academy trust and the opportunity this provides for professional development for all our staff is extensive.
Early Career Teachers – you become part of a family of new to teaching staff who meet weekly via Teams meetings to take part in a bespoke CPD package led by our lead practitioners to fully support you through your teaching standards and the early career framework. We have a number of staff within the academy and school who are excellent examples of starting as an ECT/NQT with our trust and are now in senior roles, or have worked across a variety of schools.
Subject Specialists – we have some of the country’s best and most renowned teachers as part of our trust. This means we receive the best departmental CPD either face to face through lead practitioner visits or collaboratively through remote platforms where best practice is shared between the schools.
OAT has a variety of CPD pathways to support you through whatever education pathway you wish to develop – aspiring middle leaders, Into SLT, Into VP, Into Headship – as well as delivering on all of the NPQ courses (funding is often supported through the Trust too).
We believe every student can achieve in this academy and all our staff put the students at the forefront of everything. Our academy values of Respect, Resilience and Respect are driven through all student and staff conversations and in every lesson. All staff are referred to as Sir/Miss at all times by students as a sign of respect.
